The MAX6675 is a cold-junction compensated K-type thermocouple-to-digital converter IC. It is commonly used with K-type thermocouples to measure high temperatures (0 °C to 1024 °C) and provides the temperature data digitally via an SPI interface, making it easy to use with Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi.
🔹 Details and Explanation
Type: Thermocouple-to-digital converter IC
Supported Sensor: K-type thermocouple
Temperature Range: 0 °C to +1024 °C
Resolution: 12-bit (0.25 °C per step)
Accuracy: ±2 °C (typical)
Output Interface: SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface)
Operating Voltage: 3.0V – 5.5V (works directly with 5V Arduino and 3.3V ESP boards)
Cold Junction Compensation: Automatically compensates for ambient temperature (reference junction).
🔹 Working Principle
The K-type thermocouple generates a small voltage depending on the temperature difference between its measuring tip and the reference junction.
The MAX6675 amplifies this voltage and performs cold-junction compensation (so you don’t need extra sensors).
The IC converts the temperature into a digital signal and sends it to a microcontroller over SPI.
🔹 Pin Configuration (MAX6675 module with K-type thermocouple)
VCC: 3.3V – 5V supply
GND: Ground
SCK: Serial Clock (from microcontroller)
CS: Chip Select
SO: Serial Data Out (temperature data)
🔹 Applications
Industrial furnaces and heaters
3D printers and CNC machines
Food and chemical processing industries
Temperature monitoring in kilns, boilers, and engines
Scientific experiments requiring high-temp measurements
