A flow sensor is an electronic device used to measure the rate of flow of a liquid or gas through a system. In electronics and IoT projects, the most common is the water flow sensor, which typically consists of a plastic body, a rotor (turbine), and a Hall-effect sensor. When liquid flows through the sensor, the rotor spins, and the Hall sensor generates electrical pulses proportional to the flow rate. These pulses can be counted by a microcontroller like Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi to calculate the flow rate (liters per minute) and the total volume of fluid passed.
Flow sensors are widely used in water dispensers, industrial automation, irrigation systems, medical equipment, and smart home projects to monitor and control fluid usage. Gas flow sensors, on the other hand, are often based on thermal or pressure measurement principles to detect airflow in HVAC systems, engines, and environmental monitoring.
