A fingerprint sensor is a biometric device used to identify or verify a person’s identity by capturing and analyzing the unique patterns of their fingerprint. In electronics and security systems, fingerprint sensors are widely used for access control, attendance systems, safes, and smart devices. The sensor works by scanning the ridges and valleys of a finger and converting them into a digital template. When a user places their finger on the sensor, the system compares the captured image with stored templates to grant or deny access.
The most common module in microcontroller projects is the R305 or optical fingerprint sensor, which uses optical imaging to capture the fingerprint. It communicates with boards like Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi via UART (TX/RX). Modern fingerprint sensors also come as capacitive sensors (used in smartphones), which detect electrical differences between ridges and valleys.
In practical use, fingerprint sensors allow enrollment (registering fingerprints), searching, and matching. They provide a secure and convenient alternative to passwords or keys, as fingerprints are unique to each individual.
