The L298 Motor Driver is a dual H-bridge motor driver IC that allows you to control the speed and direction of two DC motors or one stepper motor using low-voltage logic signals from a microcontroller (like Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi). It is widely used in robotics and automation projects.
🔹 Details and Explanation
IC Type: L298N is the most common version, a 15-pin IC designed for motor control.
Operating Voltage: 5V – 35V
Current Handling: Up to 2A per channel (with proper heat sinking).
Channels: 2 (can control two DC motors independently).
Logic Input Voltage: 5V (compatible with Arduino/ESP boards).
Enable Pins: Allow PWM signals for speed control.
🔹 Working Principle
The L298 has two H-Bridge circuits:
An H-Bridge is an arrangement of transistors that lets current flow through a motor in either direction → allowing forward and reverse rotation.
By applying logic HIGH/LOW signals to the input pins, you decide the motor’s direction.
By sending a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal to the enable pin, you can control the motor’s speed.
🔹 Pin Functions
IN1 & IN2: Control motor A direction
IN3 & IN4: Control motor B direction
ENA & ENB: Enable pins for Motor A & B (can be used with PWM for speed control)
OUT1 & OUT2: Outputs for Motor A
OUT3 & OUT4: Outputs for Motor B
Vcc: Motor supply (up to 35V)
5V: Logic supply
GND: Common ground
🔹 Applications
Robotics (robot cars, robotic arms)
Stepper motor control
Conveyor belts
CNC machines
Automatic gates
