The Tiny RTC I²C Module is a small real-time clock (RTC) breakout board based on the DS1307 RTC chip and an AT24C32 EEPROM. It’s commonly used in Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and other microcontroller projects where keeping accurate time and date is required, even when the system is powered off.
🔹 Main Components on the Module
DS1307 RTC IC – Provides real-time clock/calendar (seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, year).
AT24C32 EEPROM (32 Kbit / 4 KB) – Extra storage for user data via I²C.
Crystal Oscillator (32.768 kHz) – Ensures timing accuracy.
CR2032 Coin Cell Battery Holder – Keeps time running when main power is off (backup battery).
I²C Interface (SDA, SCL) – Communication with microcontrollers.
🔹 Key Specifications
RTC Chip: DS1307
EEPROM: AT24C32 (32K, i.e., 4096 × 8 bits)
Operating Voltage: 5V (can work with 3.3V logic on many boards)
Interface: I²C (SDA, SCL)
Battery: CR2032 (keeps clock running for months/years without external power)
Accuracy: ±2 seconds per day (depends on crystal & battery)
🔹 Pin Configuration
Pin Function
VCC +5V power input
GND Ground
SDA I²C data line
SCL I²C clock line
🔹 Working Principle
The DS1307 keeps track of time and calendar continuously.
When main power is removed, the backup battery powers the chip, ensuring it doesn’t lose track of time.
The AT24C32 EEPROM provides additional non-volatile storage that can be used for logging sensor data or storing settings.
The microcontroller communicates via I²C protocol to set or read time/date values.
🔹 Applications
Data Logging Systems (e.g., temperature/humidity logs with timestamps).
Clocks and Timers (digital clocks, alarms).
IoT Devices where time-stamped data is needed.
Attendance & Security Systems.
Event Scheduling in automation projects.
