A Load Cell is a type of force sensor that measures weight or force and converts it into an electrical signal. It is widely used in digital weighing machines, industrial scales, robotics, and force measurement systems.
🔹 Details and Explanation
Type: Force/Weight sensor
Working Voltage: Typically 5V (excitation voltage)
Output Signal: Very small analog voltage (in millivolts, mV) → requires an amplifier like HX711 to read with microcontrollers.
Measurement Principle: Most load cells work on the strain gauge principle.
A strain gauge changes its resistance when stretched or compressed.
The load cell has 4 strain gauges arranged in a Wheatstone Bridge configuration.
When force/weight is applied, resistance changes → producing a tiny voltage difference proportional to the applied load.
🔹 Types of Load Cells
Single Point Load Cell – used in small weighing scales.
S-Type Load Cell – S-shaped, used for tension/compression measurement.
Compression Load Cell – measures force/weight in compression.
Shear Beam Load Cell – used in industrial heavy load weighing.
🔹 Pins (4-wire standard load cell)
Red: Excitation+ (VCC, usually +5V)
Black: Excitation– (GND)
White: Signal– (Output –)
Green: Signal+ (Output +)
(Some load cells have 6 wires for extra sense connections.)
🔹 Applications
Digital weighing machines
Kitchen and industrial scales
Robotics (measuring gripping force)
Material testing machines
Force monitoring in automation
