A flex sensor is an electronic component that measures the amount of bend or flex applied to it. It is usually a thin strip made of a flexible material coated with a conductive or carbon-based ink that changes resistance when bent. In a straight position, the sensor has a certain baseline resistance (for example, 10 kΩ), and as it bends, the resistance increases. This change in resistance can be measured using a voltage divider circuit and read by a microcontroller such as Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi through an analog input pin.
Flex sensors are widely used in gesture recognition, robotics, wearable electronics, prosthetics, and gaming devices. A common application is in data gloves, where multiple flex sensors attached to fingers detect bending angles and convert them into digital signals to control robots or virtual reality systems. They are lightweight, durable, and easy to integrate into flexible or moving surfaces, making them very useful in human–machine interaction projects.
