The MAX30100 is an integrated pulse oximeter and heart-rate sensor module designed for wearable and health-monitoring applications. It combines two LEDs (red and infrared), a photodetector, optimized optics, and low-noise analog signal processing into a single device. This makes it capable of measuring both oxygen saturation in blood (SpO₂) and heart rate.
Working Principle:
The red and IR LEDs shine light through tissue (typically a fingertip or earlobe). The photodetector measures the amount of light absorbed, which changes with blood volume. The IR light is used for heart rate detection, while the ratio of red to IR absorption is used to calculate oxygen saturation.
Key Features:
Measures SpO₂ (oxygen level in blood) and heart rate.
Low power consumption (suitable for battery-powered devices).
I²C interface for communication with microcontrollers (like Arduino, ESP32, etc.).
Compact size, making it ideal for wearables.
Built-in LED driver and signal processing unit, reducing the need for external circuitry.
Applications:
Fitness trackers and smartwatches
Medical monitoring devices
Portable health gadgets
IoT-based patient monitoring systems
🔧 Interfacing with Arduino:
The MAX30100 can be easily connected to an Arduino or ESP32 using the I2C pins (SDA, SCL). Libraries like "MAX30100_PulseOximeter" are available to quickly get readings of heart rate and SpO₂.
