What is 7812?
The 7812 is a positive fixed voltage regulator IC.
The number 12 means it provides a +12V regulated output.
So: 7812 = +12V Regulated Power Supply.
⚙️ Specifications
Input Voltage: 14V – 25V DC (needs at least ~2V higher than output).
Output Voltage: Fixed at +12V DC.
Output Current: Up to 1A (with heatsink, even more in some cases).
Dropout Voltage: About 2V.
Power Dissipation: Excess energy (Vin – Vout) × Current is released as heat.
📌 Pin Configuration
Just like other 78xx regulators, it has 3 pins:
Pin 1 (Input) → Connect DC input (e.g., 15V from adaptor).
Pin 2 (Ground) → Common ground.
Pin 3 (Output) → Regulated +12V DC output.
🛠️ Working Principle
If you supply the IC with, say, 15V DC, the 7812 regulates it to a stable 12V DC output.
Any extra voltage (15 – 12 = 3V) is converted into heat, which is why a heatsink is often needed.
⚙️ Typical Circuit
15V DC Input ───► [Pin 1: IN 7812]
GND ────────────► [Pin 2: GND]
[Pin 3: OUT 7812] ─► +12V Regulated Output
Use 0.33µF capacitor at input and 0.1µF capacitor at output for stability.
Larger electrolytic capacitors (e.g., 470µF at input, 100µF at output) are often added for smoothing.
🔋 Applications
Power supply for circuits that need 12V regulated DC, such as:
Op-amp circuits (many need ±12V).
Relays, motors, and solenoids rated for 12V.
LED strips and light controllers.
Microcontrollers and sensors (if they work on 12V).
Replacement for 12V battery power.
