The BC557 is a widely used PNP bipolar junction transistor (BJT) designed for low current, medium voltage, and general-purpose switching and amplification applications. It is the complementary pair of the BC547 (NPN) transistor. In the BC557, the emitter-base junction is forward biased when a small base current flows out of the base, which allows a larger current to flow from the emitter to the collector. It typically has a collector current (Ic) rating of up to 100 mA, a collector-emitter voltage (Vce) of −45 V, and a DC current gain (hFE) ranging from 110 to 800, depending on the sub-class (A, B, or C).
